PORTABLE AUDIO

Small disc. Big curiosity.

An introduction to keeping a useful record of a MiniDisc player or recorder.

01

A different portable chapter

Sony lists the MZ-1 MiniDisc recorder in its 1992 personal-audio milestones. MiniDisc makes an interesting collecting subject because the player, controls and labeled media all offer details to document.

02

Identify before assuming

Copy the full model name from the unit and locate its manual. Do not assume that a machine can record, transfer files or play every disc type because another model in the same family can. Record the specific capabilities supported by its documentation.

03

Keep media notes separate

Give each disc a simple inventory number and keep track titles or handwritten labels in a separate list. Label information describes what someone wrote, not necessarily what is recorded on the disc. Avoid erasing or overwriting media while you are still cataloguing it.
